Wastewater Treatment Utility
Originally constructed in 1958, expanded in 1970 and upgraded in 1997, the Wastewater Treatment Utility is located at 500 South River Road and serves West Lafayette's 29,000 residents, plus Purdue University and the old regional sewer district. It treats about 9 million gallons of water daily, and about 3.3 billion gallons per year.
In 1993, the city began an aggressive 9-part, 20-year plan to significantly reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) and comply with federal regulations related to the Clean Water Act. Over the next 10 years, a number of major improvements were made, including:
- Upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant that included ammonia removal and de-chlorination (1997)
- Completion of the foundation drain disconnect program in the BarBarry neighborhood (1999)
- Construction of the North River Road lift station (1999)
- Rehabilitation of the Happy Hollow interceptor (2001)
- Construction of the wet weather treatment facility to significantly reduce CSO impacts on the Wabash River (2003)
Work began on the Western Interceptor with Phase I (2007) and Phase II (2008). Phase III along South River Road near the wastewater treatment plant has now been finished.
The project will be completed with Phase IV which will be constructed during INDOT's relocation of U.S. 231. Work on this may begin as early as 2011. As part of the Western Interceptor project, three lift stations will be eliminated (Windsor, Camelback, and Blackbird Pond).
