Originally constructed in 1958, expanded in 1970 and upgraded in 1997, the Wastewater Treatment Utility is located at 500 South River Road and serves West Lafayette's 29,000 residents, plus Purdue University and the old regional sewer district. It treats about 9 million gallons of water daily, and about 3.3 billion gallons per year.
In 1993, the city began an aggressive 9-part, 20-year plan to significantly reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) and comply with federal regulations related to the Clean Water Act. Over the next 10 years, a number of major improvements were made, including:
